Finder alternative: why a dual-pane file manager is faster

1 November 2026

Finder is the friendliest way to browse a Mac. But when you reorganise a photo archive, clean up a download folder or copy a project to an external drive, one window and a lot of dragging quickly get tiring.

1. Source and target are always visible

In a dual-pane file manager the source is on the left and the target on the right. You don't arrange windows, you don't lose the destination behind another window, and you always see the result of a copy immediately.

2. The keyboard does the heavy lifting

Mark files with Insert or Space, press F5 and confirm — done. Tab switches panes, Backspace goes up, typing filters the list. In MoloCommander you can choose Commander shortcuts (F3–F8) or the Mac ones you already know (⌘C, ⌘V, Space for Quick Look).

3. Big copies become predictable

Finder shows a progress window, but large jobs are hard to control. A copy queue shows every transfer with speed, file count and time left; you can pause, reorder or cancel, and you get a clear list of anything that could not be copied — instead of a silent half-finished folder.

4. Mistakes can be undone

MoloCommander undoes renames, batch renames, new folders, copies, moves and the Trash with ⌘Z. When you replace a file, the old version goes to the Trash first. Deleting uses the Trash by default.

5. Photos and videos at a glance

Switch any pane to thumbnails to see photos, HEIC, RAW and videos with their resolution and duration. Folders that are mostly media switch automatically — handy when sorting a camera card next to your archive.

6. Cloud folders without surprises

iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive appear as regular folders, and every file shows whether it is local, available offline or only in the cloud. Copying into a cloud folder is the safe default.

Finder and a dual-pane manager work best together

You don't have to give anything up: drag between Finder and MoloCommander in both directions, open files with their usual apps, reveal any item in Finder. Use Finder for browsing and MoloCommander for the heavy lifting.
